Public Hearing on the Adoption of the 2016-17 Budget: No one asked to speak.
Recognition of Special Olympians and Volunteers
Public Comment: A mother of one of the Special Olympics athletes thanked the School Board for providing that program in the district. “It’s changed him from a little boy to a young man,” she said.
Freedom of Information Act Requests: There have been four requests since the last board meeting related to fair share fees, tuition reimbursements, leases or agreements for cellular antennae or towers on school properties and bids for custodial supplies.

Superintendent’s Report: Superintendent Andrew DuRoss recognized staff for all the work they have done this summer to prepare for the first day of school for students on August 22. Specifically, DuRoss thanked the Department of Student Learning for its involvement in New Teacher Induction Week, student enrichment programs this summer and the Special Education Institute next week.
Foundation Report: Board Member Teresa Huber reported that the Foundation raised about $28,400 from the golf outing in June. The Foundation is currently seeking volunteers to assist with parking at Collins School during Septemberfest (Sept. 3 and 4) and volunteers who would be willing to work in a food booth during nonprofit day (, Monday, Sept. 5). The Foundation is partnering with Pilot Pete’s to run the nonprofit day booth. To volunteer call Foundation Chairman Tom Manzardo at (847) 606-2000.
PTA Report: PTA Council President Sue Budak said the PTAs have also been busy this summer reviewing plans of work, developing draft budgets, attending training workshops and planning for picture day at our schools. The first PTA Council meeting of the year will be held on Sept. 7 and the fall general meeting will be held on Oct. 13.
New Business:
The Board adopted the 2016-17 budget. The detailed budget can be found on our website.
The Board adopted a resolution directing staff to begin preparing the 2017-18 budget in tentative form.
The Board approved the appointment of Ken VanDyke, as a community representative to serve on the Advisory Council for District Initiatives.
Announcements:
Board members spoke about the excitement they witnessed from the 144 new teachers at Induction Week, as well as the high level of support from current employees who have supported our new hires this week.
Board members also attended a parent orientation session today, introducing junior high school parents to the new District 54 digital learning initiative, using Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education.
