Appealing for grass roots support, Republican Ninth Congressional District candidate Joan Lasonde recently reached out to her constituents via her Facebook page, stressing the need for solidarity at assorted upcoming weekend campaign events.

“A number of important community events are coming up, and we need our team to have a very strong showing at each of them,” she said. “There are so many ways to help us as we continue our summer push. From walking the district alongside me and my team, to being an ambassador for our cause at fun community events, every person can make a great impact for us.”

Lasonde, a foster parent herself, champions children’s advocacy, actively volunteering at her daughters’ schools and in Girl Scouts. Having worked on others’ political campaigns, she previous served as an officer of the New Trier Republican Organization and currently sits on the Illinois State Crime Commission board of directors, focused on human trafficking and the heroin epidemic.

“If you or your friends could donate even just one hour at any ... events, we will be in strong shape as we move into the heart of the summer,” Lasonde said. “Even if you can't contribute your time, you can help our efforts to build up our ground game by donating $100, $50, $25 or $15 today to go toward buying yard signs, gas for our cars and walk cards and literature.”

Events listed include sidewalk sales, a “Walk with Joan,” an arts festival and a Greek food festival, all slated for July 15-16.

Lasonde came to her campaign with a richly diversified background, including a stint as marketing director for a traveling circus and another as editor of an expat magazine while living in China. She related that her blog was often shut down by the Chinese government “for exposing the truth of what life was really like there for the poorest and most vulnerable.”

The candidate outlined her top priorities, including economic growth and opportunity, national security and homeland safety, improving relations with Israel, and allowing social programs to function unfettered by governmental oversight.

“I know that we have our work cut out for us, but together we can make a real difference in Washington,” she said.
