State Rep.Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg) joined 28 members of Chicago’s Springfield delegation in support of a state taxpayer bailout of Chicago’s Public Schools (CPS).
The bailout measure, which was part of a $40 billion proposed state budget that passed the Illinois House of Representatives 63-53, would increase northwest suburban taxpayer subsidies to CPS, which already rank among the highest in the state.
The spending plan would give CPS a total of approximately $8,600 in per-pupil subsidies. Today it receives $7,651, 51 percent of CPS total budget of $15,120 per-pupil.
In contrast, Schaumburg CCSD 54 spent $13,278 in 2015 but received just $1,793 (13%). Palatine CCSD 15 spent $12,363 and received $2,374 (19%). Township 211 in Palatine spent $17,383 and received $1,617 (nine percent) and Township 214, including Rolling Meadows spent $19,734 and received $1,875 (nine percent).
House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) crafted the $40 billion budget, which has state government spending $7 billion more next year than its projected revenues, approximately $33 billion. It proposed raising personal income taxes and borrowing to bridge the deficit.
State Representative hopeful Jillian Bernas (R-Schaumburg) said Mussman’s voting with the Chicago Machine shows “she’s the wrong voice” to represent her northwest suburban constituents.
“I want a truly balanced budget that reflects the values of our communities,” Bernas. “We value education, compassion for our neighbors and the opportunity to pursue our dreams. We can get that done in Springfield, but we need independent lawmakers who are willing to make the tough decisions needed to fix Illinois.”
Mussman’s 56th House District includes parts of Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Rolling Meadows and Roselle.
