Tattered, torn and damaged American flags in need of retirement can be taken to the front desk of the Buffalo Grove Police Department, located at 46 Raupp Blvd.
The department will collect the flags and give them to the American Veterans (AmVets) Post No. 66 for ceremonial retirement. AmVets Post 66 is located at 700 McHenry Road, Wheeling.
The U.S. flag code outlines the proper way to retire an American flag. While individual groups have their own traditions, the Department of Veterans Affairs' suggested method begins by folding the flag into a triangle. After building a fire, place the flag into the flames. Some groups display the flag respectfully first, then lay it carefully over the fire.
While the flag burns, the members of the group salute or recite the Pledge of Allegiance. In some cases, a bugler plays "Taps." A vocalist or the group may sing "God Bless America," as well.
The ceremony ends with a moment of silence. After the flag is reduced to ashes, the ashes are buried.
