The 2016 property tax abatement and the water treatment plant are on the agenda for tomorrow's meeting.
Information on the 2016 property tax abatement will be provided to the Elgin Committee of the Whole at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 24.
The committee will meet in the City Council Chambers at 150 Dexter Court.
The committee will consider the property tax abatement information before approving the annual ordinances. Property taxes are calculated based on the entire outstanding debt. Once the tax abatement ordinances are approved, the city can reduce the property tax levy because part of the debt is covered by utility fees and special revenue sources, such as the Riverboat or bond funds. After the abatement ordinances are prepared, the council can adopt them at its meeting.
The committee will also hear and discuss a $97,056 agreement with WesTech Engineering to rehabilitate the Leo Nelson Riverside water treatment plant. The treatment process removes particles, softening and filtering the water. The clarifiers at the plant need structural repairs and replacement parts.
The committee will also hear several presentations -- in addition to considering other agreements and business items -- before adjourning the meeting. The City Council meeting will follow at 7 p.m.
