The Church of the Holy Spirit plans to host a bilingual college fair this Sunday.
A bilingual college fair will be held at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg on Sunday, Feb. 21.
The fair will begin at 1 p.m., after the regular Spanish Mass at noon. The fair is free and will be held on the church’s lower level. All members of nearby communities are invited and encouraged to attend, particularly high school students exploring higher education prospects, parents seeking to prepare for their children’s college education and those interested in returning to college to begin a new career.
“It is never too early or too late to think about college,” Maria Ortiz, the event’s founder, said.
Ortiz began the event two years back in order to increase enthusiasm about higher education at the Church of the Holy Spirit.
Information will be provided in both English and Spanish about college applications and applying for financial aid. In addition, there will be several college representatives present. Participating colleges and universities include Harper Community College, Roosevelt University, Elgin Community College, North Park College, Northern Illinois University and Saint Mary’s College, among others.
“Preparing to attend college can be an involved process, takes planning and sometimes it is hard to know where to start,” Jillian Bernas, the event's organizer, said. “This event is for anyone who may have thought, even once, 'I’d like to go to college one day.'”
The church is located at 1451 Bode Road.
