Mayor's Awards Ceremony planning on the agenda for Elgin Heritage Commission meeting
The Elgin Heritage Commission will discuss the Mayor's Awards Ceremony at its next meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Also under new business, the commission will discuss May's Preservation Month events. The Heritage Commission meets in the City Council Chambers, on the second floor of the North Tower, 150 Dexter Court.
The Mayor's Awards honor those who have made outstanding contributions to Elgin's heritage while restoring and renovating historic homes in the city. The project must have been completed within the last five years. Nominations are due by Friday, Feb. 26.
The Sears plaque application for 1262 W. Highland Ave. will be reviewed by the commission. At the previous commission meeting, the members requested that the applicant add a paragraph on the history of the home and its owners to the application. It was a Sears, Roebuck and Company catalog house -- the "Betsy Ross" -- which was ordered as a kit from the mail order company and then assembled on-site. The home retains many of its original features.
After hearing reports from neighborhood groups, the commission will continue the discussion regarding directional signage and the web-based application, including tour booklets and photographs. An update on the vinyl stickers to cover the Guide-By-Cell phone number with the new website information will also be presented to the commission.
After reviewing any other business presented to the commission, the meeting will conclude.
