Illinois American Water recently awarded an $800 grant to the City of Elgin Fire Department. 

The grant will be used to pay for protective gear for the Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Team. 

"The Elgin Fire Department is always looking for grant opportunities that enable us to purchase new equipment without placing an additional financial burden on our taxpayers," Fire Chief John Fahy said. "On behalf of Elgin citizens, we would like to express our gratitude to Illinois American Water for its generous grant."

Illinois American Water is a subsidiary of American Water, which is the U.S.’s largest investor-owned water and wastewater provider. The team in Illinois consists of more than 450 employees who are committed to quality water services. Illinois American Water partners with local communities and invests in programs that benefit local community needs.

Illinois American Water awards grants to charitable organizations and government agencies within its service area. The grant proposals are referred to local service district offices; an employee committee makes the funding decisions. 

The grants are generally categorized in the following areas: water and the environment, water and healthy living, environmental education and community sustainability.
