The Elgin, Illinois Human Relations Commission (HRC) met recently and welcomed a new commissioner, continued planning the Martin Luther King celebration.
Pastor Bob Whitt has joined the commission. A pastor for an Elgin church for 17 years, Commissioner Whitt expressed his desire to assist in bringing the people of Elgin together.
The commission was updated on the plans for the MLK weekend. Prayers by clergy at the Prayer Breakfast will include Commissioner Whitt and a member of the Congregation Kneseth Israel. The MLK committee has also reached out to the Buddhist and Muslim communities and is waiting for replies. The keynote speaker at the breakfast will be Joyce Fountain.
The commission discussed the Sunday program, including a "MLK Scholar" initiative. The commission was reminded that only Elgin residents are eligible for the HRC's MLK Scholarships.
Monday's Youth Conference is expecting approximately 300 youths. The keynote speaker has been selected for the conference. The food drive, also on Monday, is being organized by Joe Wars.
In addition to the MLK weekend activities, the commission heard reports regarding the Black Lives Matter brainstorming meeting and the Diversity Committee. The commission has also requested training from the Legal Department and staff liaison Gail Cohen will follow up on this matter.
