The Committee of the Whole of Park Ridge, Illinois recently sent forward an anti-nepotism policy to the City Council for approval.
The committee discussed the nepotism policy at the Sept. 23 and Nov. 23 meetings. It was placed on the Dec. 7 City Council agenda for the first reading. It passed six to one.
The city's policy prohibits nepotism. To avoid favoritism based on family relationships, the immediate family members of the City Council, City Manager and department heads are not eligible for employment by the city. These relatives include a spouse or equivalent relationship, as well as birth, half, step or in-law relatives who are a parent, child, brother, sister and grandparent. The policy also includes guardians and wards of the city officials.
Extended family members may be considered for employment if they do not work as a supervisor or subordinate to the official or department head, it will not affect work performance, and there is no actual or perceived conflict of interest.
Immediate or extended relatives of any other Park Ridge employees are eligible for employment based on their qualifications. If the position requires that the family member become a supervisor or subordinate to a relative, affects work performance or creates an actual or perceived conflict of interest, then the family member cannot be hired.
The nepotism policy does not apply to members of boards and commissions or seasonal and temporary employees. It also does not apply to positions with the Fire and Police departments. The ordinance was slated for a final reading before the City Council at the Dec. 21 meeting.
