The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners of the City of Elgin, Illinois met recently to discuss changes to the firefighter exam.
The board started the meeting by reviewing and approving the Aug. 20 meeting minutes.
Senior human resources advisor Tim Bennett updated the board on the firefighter exam. The legal department was reviewing the changes the board requested. To implement the changes, the revisions must go before the City Council for approval. At this point, the board could move forward with the current testing process, open it immediately and use the requirements from the last posting of the position.
The second option would require waiting for the legal department to provide recommendations to the City Council, wait for council approval and then begin the firefighter testing process. By waiting for council approval, the tests may not open until January. After discussion, the board voted unanimously to wait for the City Council to approve the ordinance and implement the changes before opening the firefighting testing process.
The board set a tentative date for a special meeting on Dec. 9 to review the draft ordinance before it goes to the City Council. The board also discussed the cost of background checks for applicants for firefighter positions. Fire Chief John Fahy volunteered to discuss the issue with the legal department as part of the new ordinance being drafted for City Council approval.
There was no business for the Executive Session, so following the firefighter testing discussion, the meeting was adjourned.
