A World War II-era home is set to be designated a historic landmark by the Park Ridge, Illinois City Council.
The owner and applicant Margaret Hall applied for the historic landmark designation for 122 N. Delphia on June 3. The vintage home is one of the many houses built in 1944 to house Douglas Aircraft Plant workers. Federal programs oversaw the construction of the houses, which were needed for the flood of workers that migrated to Park Ridge and other towns and cities to work for the war effort.
The house was built using the directives of the War Housing Manual. The U.S. War Production Board determined the materials used in the War Homes, conserving on materials needed for the war effort. As a part of Park Ridge's heritage, it adds significant interest to the city's history.
The public hearing was held by the Historic Preservation Commission on Nov. 4, and after the hearing was closed, the commission approved the recommendation that the council make 122 N. Delphia Ave. an official historic landmark with a unanimous vote.
When the recommendation moved forward to the Dec. 7 City Council meeting, the council approved the first reading with a unanimous vote. The final reading and approval of the ordinance was held at the Dec. 21 City Council meeting.
