Elgin Board of Health met, reviewed second and third quarter reports

The Elgin, Illinois Board of Health met recently in the City Hall Community Development Conference Room.

After approving the minutes of the April 12 meeting, the board reviewed the second and third quarter reports. The Board of Health inspects food establishments, foodborne illness (FBI) complaints, insect and rodent complaints, smoking, swimming pools, air pollution, water pollution and a variety of other cases that may affect public health.

Inspections and reinspections of food establishments were held every month, and those reports were presented to the board. In September, Camaroncito Loco discarded approximately one pound of food due to cross contamination and Elgin Turners was fined $150 for installing a hood, duct and fire suppression system without a permit. Casa Lara was closed for two days because there was no hot water.

One FBI complaint was evaluated and investigated in August. Colonial Cafe was fined $500 for unsanitary conditions.

One FBI and two non-FBI complaints were investigated in July. Approximately 25 pounds of food at Mr. Wok and one pound of food from Lords Park Swimming Facility concession stand were discarded because they were not stored at the correct temperature.

Pools at Hunters Ridge, Comfort Inn and Suites and Century Oaks as well as the spa at Holiday Inn were closed temporarily due to improper disinfectant levels in June. Four FBI and 13 non-FBI cases were investigated. A mobile food truck illegally preparing food on site discarded approximately 10 pounds of food, while Sammy's Mexican Grill discarded 13 pounds of food for improper temperature.

One FBI and nine non-FBI cases were investigated in May. Quick E Mart discarded approximately 12 pounds of food due to improper temperature. Camaroncito Loco was fined $300 and Rosati's Pizza was fined $150.

April produced one FBI and 11 non-FBI complaints. BP Elgin Gasoline discarded seven pounds of sandwiches and Express Bakery discarded approximately 25 pounds of baked goods due to improper temperature.

After hearing the reports, public comments and miscellaneous items, the meeting was adjourned.
