A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Prospect Heights Finance Department regarding sales tax collected from retailers on October 25, 2024. The request was made by North Cook News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability in public institutions, we sought specific records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. The requested information includes details about sales tax collected from retailers starting from January 1, 2024 till the present date.
The data fields specified in our request include the monthly comparison of actual sales tax collected versus projected figures, the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month, and the names of each retailer along with their reported gross retail sales for each month.
As a media organization, we believe access to public records is crucial for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We also asserted our eligibility for a fee waiver as a media professional due to our role in disseminating information to the public.
