Village of Buffalo Grove Commission for Residents with Disabilities met May 24

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

I. Welcome & Call to Order at 7:00pm 

II. Roll Call 

a. Commissioners Present: Chair Judy Samuels, Vice Chair Marty Sussman, Commissioners Lexi Robinson, Avi Samuels, Allie Zalay, Mark Weiner, Dean Klassman, Beth Shapiro, Jack Shapiro, Matthew Dragon

b. Commissioners Not Present: Commissioners Gowri Magati, David Morton, Leo Njongmeta, Donna Garfield

c. Trustee Liaison Present: Trustee Liaison Andy Stein

d. Staff Liaison Present: Evan Michel

III. Approval of Minutes with Changes: April 26, 2023

a. Motion: Commissioner Lexi Robinson

b. Motion: Commissioner Matthew Dragon

c. Approve: All present

d. Oppose: None

e. Abstain: None

f. Motion carries 

IV. Chair report (Judy Samuels)

a. Changing the meeting room – PW building is going to be sold eventually 

i. RKCRD Meetings to move back to the EOC Room at Village Hall

• Next month we’ll meet in the EOC Room

V. Trustee(s) Report (Andy Stein)

a. New liaison structure – there is a primary liaison and secondary liaison for each commission, Trustee Stein will be the primary liaison and Trustee Weidenfeld will be the secondary for the commission

i. Only one liaison will be present at each commission meeting

ii. If there is not a Trustee Liaison present then Staff Liaison Michel will relay any messages or information

VI. Staff Liaison Report (Evan Michel)

a. Strategic Planning Update

i. Staff Liaison Michel will be revising our strategic plan to synthesize our goals and ideas

• Volunteers to support the revision will be Commissioners Zalay, Weiner, Sussman

b. BG Days Update

i. Buddy Baseball – good for Saturday game, looking for more clarity from the police department on the parking situation (re: not parking on Aptakisic Road for safety purposes)

• Sunday is the rain date

• Police will be there to help direct traffic

• Park district will have tables set up

• Staff Liaison Michel will reserve the field 4-7:30pm

ii. Courtesy Shuttle = same schedule format as last year, we will fill in what we can and what we cannot fill in the Community Events Committee will support

• There will be three large shuttles

• Questions for follow-up = who will be the point person at the info tent if someone is running late?

iii. Fun and Food – carnival is set and good to go, there are 11 food trucks confirmed for Monday morning for the event

• Possibility to partner with a handful of food trucks to provide food for the food trucks for the event

a. Questions = Which specific trucks? What food options?

Could we still distribute in the same way we have in years past?

b. Goal is to maintain the character of the event to see if a partnership would be possible while still maintaining the character

c. Staff Liaison will inquire with the Park District

d. The Commission is open to additional sponsors through connections with the Park District sponsorship packages if we are also allowed to utilize our usual sponsors and funds – Staff Liaison Michel will double check

e. Staff Liaison Michel will check about additional programming on Monday – including DJ Entertainment and mascots like was available in years past in the food tent

f. QR code for additional donations to the foundation for RKCRD

g. Bingo Night – can the Rotary be equipped with ways to contact the Courtesy Shuttle, can we set up a stop by the tent, can we get a walkie-talkie to Rotary?

VII. Sub-Committee report 

a. Buddy Baseball (Commissioner Klassman)

i. We need to order roughly 15 medium shirts for Buddy Baseball using the same design as last year

b. Fun and Food (Commissioner Verson)

i. Commissioner Robinson will create a form for Fun and Food registration VIII. Unfinished Business 

IX. New Business 

a. Athletico Parking

i. There was a change in where they allowed Athletico parking –spots used to be in the fire lane – these were not striped for handicap, these were designated for Athletico

• Was there a requirement to where the handicap parking should be when it was initially placed?

• What was the required minimum of parking spots? What is the required minimum of distance?

• Are businesses able to move spots without consulting the Village?

b. SHS Accessibility

i. Vice Chair Sussman poses the question - can the Village include a clause to contract with places that are accessible for those who are disabled (example: the Buffalo Grove Band Concert at SHS)

• This has been a recurring issue at this location

• Vice Chair Sussman to bring this to the attention of the band

c. Buddy Bowling

i. Will be held on October 25, 2023

ii. Commissioners Weiner and Robinson will collaborate on an email list with a Save the Date information and indicating that registration links are forthcoming
