Elgin Parks and Recreation Master Plan Community Input

The City of Elgin Parks and Recreation Department is seeking resident feedback on the Master Plan recommendations that were presented by SmithGroup, Inc. at the second community input meeting held on February 15. The recommendations can be viewed on the boards that will remain up at the Edward Schock Centre until March 31.

The recommendation boards are currently located at the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way, in the lobby area. Residents can provide feedback by placing green dots by areas they see as priorities. They may also place post-it notes on the boards they feel are missing elements to be considered.

The boards showcase overall recommendations which include developing standard park signage and wayfinding, improving infrastructure, maintenance and vegetation and updating accessibility and connectivity. The boards also give recommendations for nine focus parks: Drake Field, Elgin Shores, Elgin Sports Complex, Festival Park, Lords Park, Mulberry Grove Park, Summerhill Park, Walton Island and Wing Park.

Elgin Parks and Recreation Master Plan Process

The City of Elgin Parks and Recreation Department is focusing on creating a strategic master plan that will help guide decisions over the next five to eight years. The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life for residents of every Elgin neighborhood by protecting the unique natural resources, enhancing the cultural treasures and protecting the historical identity of the City. In addition, the department works to provide access to an integrated community and regional system of parks and recreation facilities, services and programs with an eye on the future while preserving the past.

SmithGroup, Inc. was hired to assist the City with this master plan process. SmithGroup completed the most recent update to the Elgin Parks and Recreation Department Master Plan in 2011. They were chosen due to their experience creating parks and recreation master plans for other communities similar to Elgin in size and diversity.
