The village of Wheeling added a new part to their village code pertaining to electric vehicles.

"It'll go into effect within ten days of tonight. Let me rephrase that. It will go into effect after we put signage up. We cannot issue tickets until signage is installed." Attorney James Ferolo said.

The village of Wheeling added a chapter to Title 9 of their code that pertains to electric vehicles, electric vehicle parking and charging stations. The village attorney explained the new code, which is consistent with the state code on the subject. This new code would restrict parking at electric vehicle charging stations to only electric vehicles.

Nonelectric vehicles that park in these spaces will face a tow of the car and a $100 fine. For electric vehicles at the charging station, there will be a three-hour time limit and it must be connected to the charging station, not just in the space. A violation of this is also punishable by a fine.

Currently, the only enforceable parking spot is the one by village hall. All of the locations where this code is applicable will need to have signage put up explaining the code, and until this is done the village is not able or allowed to tow or fine any cars that violate the code.
