The Prospect Heights School District 23 Board of Education held a meeting Oct. 12 that covered the McArthur Middle School Student Senate’s fundraiser and goals for making teaching improvements.

The student senate, a student leadership group at MacArthur Middle School, came to promote its upcoming fundraiser to the board, the Hot Chocolate 5K, planned for November to benefit St. Jude's.

Adults (13+) will have an entry fee of $20 while kids 12 and under will pay $15. All minors have to have a waiver signed by their guardian. The students are asking everyone to register by Nov 5. Included in the entry fee is a race T-shirt and refreshments afterwards. The 5K will be held on Nov. 12 at MacArthur Middle School fields. Check in is 8:30-8:55 a.m. with the run/walk starting at 9 a.m. The 3.1 mile race will take participants through the village. People who are interested in donating or supporting the cause but aren’t interested in racing are encouraged to donate in their name.

“Thank you for your leadership and we look forward to the run,” Superintendent Don Angelaccio said.

To volunteer for the event, email Athena Kalaras at akalaras@d23.org.

The superintendent also talked to students about their roles and thoughts on being involved in the student council. The students discusses how they joined to get involved in the school and because they value leadership. They meet once a month after school, occasionally before school based on the group’s schedules.

The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Grodsky Administration Building on 700 North Schoenbeck Road.
