Superintendent Eric Witherspoon praised Evanston Township High School athletes for their many victories during the past season at a school board meeting.

“We’re going to invite all of you to come around the horseshoe here, so we can give you some fistbumps or elbow bumps or handshakes,” Witherspoon said during the meeting. “And when you get to the board president, we have a pin here commemorating you being honored by the board of education.”

ABC 7 reported that student Olivia Ohlson, who plays golf, basketball and softball, won the ESPY award, a critically acclaimed sports award, for her work in sports and supporting other girls of color in sports.

The high school girls' soccer team at Evanston Township high had an amazing season, winning four championships throughout the year and bringing home the second-ever state trophy in the history of their program at ETHS. The team had a record of 21-4-1 and only had 19 goals scored against them, bringing in 89 goals scored throughout their season.

“The most important thing about this team this year is that we want to play for each other,” Nahla Dominguez, a co-captain for the Wildkits girls soccer team, said to Evanston Roundtable. “I’m trying to be just one of the many leaders on this team. We all push each other. We have a really great work ethic. Everyone is all-in and gives 110% even in practice – it’s really insane! And the chemistry? It’s always been there.”

The boys' and girls' track and field have won 15 state championships between them. Since 2019, the two teams have won five individual state titles. The boys track and field coach has been at ETHS since 1980 and has had 7 state champion relay teams and 5 individual state champions. Two recent boys from the team went undefeated in their seasons.

The accomplishments came after the school canceled all events and activities during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic— temporally killing sports.

Although the girls, and all athletes at the school, had an abbreviated season in 20-21, they still managed to come back for their 21-22 season with success. A relay team of four girls from ETHS brought home the school’s 24th state championship in the 2021 season. All three of them returned to ETHS the next season as well, and some of them went on to set a new school record for the 4x400 relay team in the 21-22 season.
