After more than 30 people were shot in Chicago in one weekend and nine killed, state Rep. Lindsey LaPointe (D-Chicago) encouraged residents to turn out a for a upcoming community meeting on reducing gun violence.
“Many of us were anxious and devastated to wake up to shots fired and a person killed in Jefferson Park last night," the legislator said on Facebook. " I have reached out to the 16th district and learned there is a forthcoming community meeting (watch for details). Public safety and reducing gun violence is undeniably one of the most pressing issues facing our city. My office will continue to focus on this issue, both in our own area and across the city in our neighborhoods with persistently high levels of gun violence and resultant trauma."
Se urged constituents to email his office at info@replapointe.com if they would like to discuss the issue further or participate in "listening visits" to community based organizations.
"There are many ways to tackle this issue in the short and long term to work toward lasting safety in all corners of Chicago," she wrote. "In addition to watching out for and supporting your neighbors and building community through our strong neighborhood groups, we encourage people to follow the 16th district on their Facebook page and engage in CAPS meetings.”
