How long did Des Plaines inventors wait for patents granted in week ending Aug. 7?

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in the week ending Aug. 7 in Des Plaines was 985 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by Riddell, Inc. for a pad member of an internal padding assembly of a protective sports helmet. It was filed on Nov. 22, 2018 before being approved on Aug. 3, 2021.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were five patents granted for Des Plaines inventors in the week ending Aug. 7.
