CITY OF EVANSTON: Submit 2021 Residential Permits Early

Local gov stock 01

City of Evanston issued the following announcement on Apr 2.

With a high volume of building permit activity expected this spring and summer, the City of Evanston's Building and Inspection Services Division is encouraging residents and businesses to submit permits as soon as possible this year to avoid delays to their projects.

In 2020, more residential permits were submitted than ever before during the months of August, September and October, as residents spent more time at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The City is anticipating a similar high demand in 2021.

The City's Building and Inspection Services Division issues residential permits for remodeling, repairing, and all new construction projects. Express permits, which are for simpler projects that can be submitted online, are usually issued within 24 to 48 hours after submission. Other larger, more complex projects must be reviewed and have plans approved by staff from multiple departments in order to be issued. This process can take up to four weeks or longer during peak summer months.

If the property is a landmark or in a historic district, this requires a preservation review which will lengthen the time of the approval process.

How To Submit A Permit

Express permits must be submitted online and will no longer be accepted via email. Express permit types accepted online include:

  • A/C Replacement Existing Location
  • CCCD w/o Fire Suppression
  • Electrical - Non Solar
  • Electrical - Temporary
  • HVAC - Furnace, Boilers
  • Interior Drain Tile
  • Plumbing
  • Roofing
  • Siding and Gutters
  • Tuckpointing/Masonry
  • Window Replacement
Visit permits.cityofevanston.org/CitizenAccess to submit an application online.

All other permit applications that require review and approval must be submitted via email to permitdesk@cityofevanston.org along with the necessary supporting documents. Documents should be submitted in pdf format only and in a single email.

Permits are processed in the order in which they are received. It may take a couple of days before an application begins the approval process.
