City of Evanston issued the following announcement on Jan. 4.
Greenways Worker III Gary Eanes will retire from the City of Evanston today, January 4, after more than 24 years of dedicated service. As a member of the Public Works Agency, Gary has spent much of his tenure cultivating and maintaining the beloved Merrick Rose Garden.
The Merrick Rose Garden, which features hundreds of beautiful rose bushes, as well as a replica of the historic Fountain Square Centennial Fountain, has been a part of Evanston since 1948 when it was dedicated in honor of Clinton Merrick, a prominent attorney and 2nd Ward alderman. Over the years, many improvements have been made and new installments added, making this landmark a popular venue for weddings, special occasions, photographs and daily strolls for many.
Care of this garden is a year-round job and requires seasonal maintenance. Every winter, the rose bushes are “put to bed” by covering them to protect their root systems. When spring arrives, the bushes are “woken up” by uncovering them and performing deadheading, which involves removing all of the dead portion of the stem systems. Then fertilization takes place and the roses begin to produce flowers. New rose bushes are replaced and there are often around 200 different varieties to tend. Care of the garden also includes weekly cutting and de-weeding of the grass, cleaning and maintaining the fountain, monitoring the irrigation system, managing memorial benches, and cleaning the grounds after events.
Gary’s work has brought much beauty to the residents of Evanston over the years, many of whom have shared their compliments and words of appreciation.
“Gary Eanes has done excellent work at the Merrick Rose Garden all these years. He has tended the roses and other plants with diligence and devotion. Thanks to his creativity and nurturing, we all have been able to enjoy the bountiful display of the roses as well as the peaceful ambience in the garden. Especially during this past year, it has served as a refuge for many,” said one Evanston resident.
Best wishes to Gary as he enjoys a much deserved retirement. His work ethic and positive attitude will also be missed dearly by his colleagues.
