Evanston Township High School District 202 issued the following announcement on Dec. 11.
Evanston Township High School District 202 has been recognized by the Illinois Food Scrap Coalition (IFSC) for its composting efforts. The IFSC named ETHS a “Silver Level We Compost” partner for the school’s commitment to food scrap diversion by either composting pre-consumer or post-consumer food scrap.
The Waste Diversion Subcommittee of the ETHS Sustainability Advisory Committee, made up of ETHS students, parents, community members, and staff, has helped reduce waste at ETHS through food scrap composting in the school’s kitchen, as well as the Terrace (staff cafeteria) and the South Study Café.
One of the goals of the IFSC is to work with K-12 schools, universities, and colleges to incorporate food scrap diversion and the education that supports that diversion. Future goals of the ETHS Sustainability Advisory Committee include expanding composting to more school cafeterias.
“This recognition from the IFSC is a testament to our community’s shared commitment to reducing waste,” said ETHS District 202 Superintendent Eric Witherspoon. “This work has long-lasting benefits and truly models what we can do to create a more sustainable world today and for years to come.”
