Veteran state Rep. Tom Morrison (R-Palatine) has secured a sixth term in the 54th District seat by reaffirming to voters what they already know.

“We’re always talking about how taxes are out of control,” Morrison told the North Cook News. “And they know I’m the candidate most capable of pushing for the reforms needed to stop the constant increases.”

Morrison topped Democrat Maggie Trevor by more than 4,000 votes, 24,332 (54.7%) to 20,137 (45.3%). Soon after the final tally was recorded, he was already reflecting on how the real work now begins.

“It’s a relief that the so-called progressive tax was voted down, but the fact remains it’s time for us in Springfield to have a serious conversation about reforming spending, reforming taxes and reforming pensions at the state level,” he said. “As I have spoken with many friends and neighbors across our district, it is clear that Illinois needs to embrace fiscal responsibility, promote economic freedom and serve our people.”

A member of the House’s Appropriations–General Services committee, Morrison added much of his campaign was spent warning voters about what he sees as the evils of the so-called fair tax promoted by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“It was never going to do what the governor was saying it would,” he said. “And it wouldn’t have been long before the tax was hitting everyone and not just the rich as the governor claims. I’m glad I was able to cut through all the advertisement and truthfully answer people’s questions about the tax.”

Now in his 10th year of serving as the face of the district, Morrison has previously blasted the governor as being disconnected from the people he’s supposed to represent.

“Taxation is a major obstacle for businesses in Illinois everywhere,” he added. “If this tax becomes law, it will only hurt the state economy and individual job prospects more as more businesses decide to close or move away to other places.”
