Dear Editor,
COVID-19 is impacting everyone’s lives across the United States, especially in Illinois. Businesses are struggling to stay open and juggle the new health protocols for employees and customers. As a small business owner, I am especially grateful to be open. But Illinois lawmakers continue to make life difficult for small businesses like mine.
Like many others, my company is facing significantly higher taxes from the progressive tax on the November ballot along with escalating minimum wage hikes that will make businesses’ COVID-19 pain even worse. New restrictions had already hurt our revenue, but now we are forced to consider layoffs in our workforce, as we cannot keep up with the new taxes and requirements that will also raise workers’ compensation costs.

Businesses like mine will not be able to afford these new costs on top of trying to recover from a historic economic and health crisis. Our lawmakers must rethink these proposals and how they will affect small businesses. If not, even more businesses will go under and employees will be out of work.
