ELK GROVE PARK DISTRICT: Pollinator Week 2020

Bees

Elk Grove Park District issued the following announcement on June 22.

National Pollinator Week is June 22-26, 2020. Each of us depends on the services of pollinators, like honey bees and other insects, to provide us with the wide range of foods we eat and enjoy including fruits, vegetables and nuts. Pollinator Week is a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what you can do to help protect them. Learn more about this topic from its originators, the Pollinator Partnership.

The Buzz on Bees

Unlike what the "Bee Movie" portrayed, there are three types of bees in a colony. The first is the Queen Bee who’s responsible for laying eggs and is only fed Royal Jelly (straight honey with no pollen). Second is the Drone. Drones are male bees, oversized with no stinger. They have one job in the spring.flight of the honey bee. and after that, all they do is hangout in the hive and eat honey (ahemm, might sound familiar….think, think, think). Drones are kicked out of the hive before winter as the workers prepare to hunker down and ration honey. Finally, there is the worker bee. Worker bees are all female, have stingers and die when they use them.they really must be provoked. Worker bee responsibilities include; guarding the nest, collecting pollen (up to 3 miles distance from the hive), caring for the larva, and all worker bees protect the queen. One thing the "Bee Movie" got right is that we cannot live without Bees!
