Glencoe Park District issued the following announcement on June 12.
The Village of Glencoe and Glencoe Park District have partnered to provide fun, socially distant Independence Day activities after the unfortunate cancellation of Glencoe’s traditional 4th of July celebrations due to the COVID-19 crisis. Glencoe’s new events for Saturday, July 4 include a Village and Park District vehicle parade, a patriotic house decorating challenge, a virtual Glencoe’s Got Talent and a Rotary Fun Run.
For this year’s Glencoe 4th of July parade, the Village and Park District are coming to you! Rather than gathering in downtown Glencoe, the parade (including Public Safety and Public Works vehicles, as well as Park District trucks and equipment) will work its way through the community between 1-3 PM.
Step out on your front porch and wave your flags as the parade passes by! A detailed parade route map that will include as much of the Village as possible will be shared with the community as the event date approaches. Since the Village is focused on keeping the community healthy and safe, parade vehicles will not stop, and no candy or other materials will be handed out. On-lookers are asked not to congregate on sidewalks and to remain on their property as the parade vehicles pass by.
Residents are also encouraged to celebrate their patriotic spirit by decking out their homes and front lawns as part of an Independence Day decorating challenge! To participate, e-mail your address to Liz Visteen at evisteen@glencoeparkdistrict.com by Sunday, June 28. A map of all participating homes will be created and shared with the Glencoe community to enjoy.
This year’s Rotary Fun Run will be a virtual one, with participants able to run or walk two miles anytime between July 3-5. Runners and walkers will be encouraged to raise funds for Special Olympics. Participants who raise $50 for Special Olympics will receive a special 2020 4th of July commemorative hat, and those who raise $100 will receive a 4th of July t-shirt. Once you complete your two mile run/walk, submit proof of it using Map My Run (or an alternative) to Liz Visteen at evisteen@glenoceparkdistrict.com. The first 100 people to send in their time will receive a 4th of July finisher ribbon.
Glencoe's Got Talent will still take place on July 4, but online! The annual show will feature talented performers under the age of 18, and will be held from 11 AM-12:30 PM via Zoom and broadcast live on Facebook. Singers, musicians and dancers are welcome to sign up to perform by 5 PM on Monday, June 29. There will be a limit of 15 acts, with each one no more than three minutes long.
