ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 19: LaPointe Champions New Law for “Cocktails To-Go”

Meeting 08

Illinois State House District 19 issued the following announcement on June 12.

To provide assistance to bars and restaurants that have been experienced significant downturn in normal operations due to COVID-19, state Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, D-Chicago, led an economic relief effort known as “cocktails to-go” allowing establishments to sell mixed alcohol drinks through pickup and delivery.

“This unprecedented health crisis has had a profound negative effect on the hospitality industry, and many local businesses are struggling to keep the lights on,” said LaPointe. “I was proud to work with Senator Feigenholtz and other legislators to provide financial relief to business owners and help them recover as we rebuild our economy.”

In response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, LaPointe co-sponsored House Bill 2682 to allow bars and restaurants to sell cocktails and other mixed drinks for curbside pickup and delivery. This measure would require mixed alcoholic drinks to be kept in sealed and labeled containers with tamper-proof seals or caps and prohibit delivery through third-party services. LaPointe’s bill was signed into law by Gov. Pritzker last week and the City of Chicago is expected to address the measure in their next City Council meeting on June 17.

“This legislation will provide a crucial lifeline for our bars and restaurants and help them generate new forms of revenue,” LaPointe said. “Small businesses are the backbone to our state’s economy, and in order to keep our state moving forward, we must do everything we can to help them stay open.”
