ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 19: LaPointe Advocates for Equitable Internet Access, Boosts Wi-Fi Hotspots for Students during COVID-19

Illinois State House District 19 issued the following announcement on April 24.

Working to close the digital divide, state Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, D-Chicago, is promoting the state’s official Wi-Fi hotspot map to help ensure every student has reliable internet access during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

“Due to this unprecedented health crisis, Illinois students have had to transition to online learning, and not everyone has access to a reliable internet connection,” said LaPointe. “That is why I wanted to promote this new Wi-Fi hotspot map to help students access the internet they need to finish their education on a strong note.”

LaPointe is promoting the new Wi-Fi hotspot map available through the state of Illinois. With the recent announcement that schools will be closed for the remainder of the year, reliance on remote learning will increase, and not all young people have reliable internet acccess at home. The state has launched a WiFi hotspot map to help students who do not have internet access at home to help them participate in e-learning. “Although this is a crucial step in the right direction, I also acknoweldge there remains a lot of work to be done to ensure every family has access to the internet,” LaPointe said. “No matter where you come from, every student is deserving of the resources and support they need to obtain a quality education.”
