An outpatient rehabilitation clinic could soon be coming to the Arlington Heights area as a primary source of treatment for patients recovering from neurological injuries.
The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab recently announced plans for the 14,786-square-foot clinic recently acquired that was formerly home to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. AbilityLab conducts inpatient rehabilitation at its main campus in downtown Chicago and also does business at a number of outpatient and day rehabilitation programs across the state, including Elk Grove Village, Wheeling, Glenview, Burr Ridge and Homewood.
If the North Wilke Road clinic is approved, it would offer three-hour therapy sessions throughout each day. The day rehab centers serve patients being treated for strokes, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.
The Arlington Heights rehab center has also proposed a 17-foot-tall canopy above the main entrance as a safe drop-off and pickup area for patients. The village board recently granted a permit that paves the way for interior renovations to proceed in lieu of the village board's final approval for a land-use variation.
The project was originally recommended without resistance by the planning commission in late February and was set to be reviewed by village trustees in March, but that meeting was canceled due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
