Illinois state Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) has been named to the Joint Advisory Council on Higher Education in Illinois.

A former College of DuPage Board (COD) Trustee, Mazzochi has a history of working in the area of education, including helping to lead COD back from the brink of ruin in 2015 to the point of the school regaining its full accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. Among the other reforms she helped institute was the hiring of a new president and installing new financial controls.

The Joint Advisory Council is entrusted with streamlining processes, maximizing cost efficiencies and improving educational outcomes for college-level students across the state.

“Illinois cannot support industries offering high-paying jobs without a well-trained workforce,” Mazzochi said in a press release. “Our state should be doing more to maximize the number of students completing valuable credit-bearing certificate programs, two-year or four-year degree programs so they can stay here in Illinois and have a bright future.”

Mazzochi said the Joint Advisory Council will go about attaining its goals by studying all instructional models, examining instructional models and analyzing developmental education placement practices and policies used at other institutions.

“It is also critical that our higher-education offerings remain affordable,” Mazzochi added. “We must ensure college students graduate with marketable skills, with little to no debt, and want to stay in Illinois.”

Mazzochi has previously supported such successful legislation as House Bill 2512, which seeks to improve college cost transparency, and House Bill 0026, which guarantees admission to Illinois universities to the top 10 percent of students.

Still in her first-term, Mazzochi’s 47th District includes all or parts of Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Western Springs, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Westmont and Downers Grove.
