City of Evanston issued the following announcement on June 17.
After the wettest May on record for northern Illinois since 1871, the City of Evanston’s Health & Human Services Department and the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) are taking action to control the mosquito population.
With soil saturated by recent heavy rains, standing water has been reported in Evanston parks and public spaces. To prevent mosquitoes from breeding, City and NSMAD staff ensure that treatment is performed in these areas.
Residents are encouraged to call/text 847-448-4311 to report standing water in roadside ditches, flooded areas, parks and other locations where mosquitoes will breed.
In addition, the Health & Human Services Department offers the following tips to avoid mosquito-borne illnesses:
- Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, between dusk and dawn.
- When outdoors, wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts, and use insect repellents.
- Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens.
- Eliminate sources of standing water by emptying stagnant water in wading pools, bird baths, pet dishes, and gutters.
