Sean M. Morrison, 17th District member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, won re-election last week against his Democrat challenger, Abdelnasser Rashid.
“It was a tough battle, but we persevered in the end,” the Republican said of winning a second four-year term via Twitter Nov. 9.
The race was an especially tight one, with Morrison prevailing in a 51-49 split, according to Ballotpedia.org. Morrison, a three-year board veteran, captured 60,778 votes versus 58,896 for Rashid.

However, the Cook County Board remains largely in Democrat hands, as Morrison mentioned in a separate Tweet. As the Chicago Sun-Times reported, 15 Democrat occupy board seats after the election, leaving only two Republicans.
“In spite of the Blue Wave, we prevailed in suburban Cook County,” Morrison posted separately on Twitter.
According to his constituent newsletter, Morrison sponsored a bill to repeal the city’s soda tax and backed a plan to trim the budget by $200 million. He has also helped acquire funding for infrastructure development at Touhy Avenue, Franklin Avenue, Proviso Drive and other projects.
