NORTHBROOK PARK DISTRICT: Calls on Girl Scouts to Help Monarch Butterflies

Girlscouts

Northbrook Park District issued the following announcement on Oct. 4.

Northbrook Girl Scout troops discovered ways they could give back to their community October 3 during the Village initiative “Building My Community” meeting featuring Northbrook Park District and other local government/community groups.

Girl Scouts Community Badge

District Executive Director Molly Hamer talked to the girls at Northbrook Village Hall about increasing monarch butterfly populations and habitat by planting milkweed, explaining how milkweed is the only food source of monarch caterpillars, making the plant critical to monarch butterflies’ survival and annual migration to Mexico. Each girl received a packet of milkweed seeds to take home and plant.

Other presentations included Northbrook Village Hall, Police Department and Public Works and Northbrook Public Library, Northbrook Fire Department, Northbrook Historical Society and Northfield Township Food Pantry.

For participating in the program, youngsters also received Building My Community badges.

Scouts can earn “service charms” for their badges through projects that take care of the environment, help animals, assist those in need and use science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM) to improve their community.
