River Trails School District 26 accumulated $11.56 million in debt between fiscal years 2008 and 2017, according to a North Cook News analysis of public schools data.

Spending and revenue data obtained for this analysis comes from the Illinois Local Education Agency Retrieval Network (ILEARN), which is part of the Illinois State Board of Education and collects data annually on school district financials.

Over the 10-year span, River Trails SD 26 reported 18.6 percent more revenue. At the same time, total spending went up 24.2 percent. The resulting deficit grew by 123.8 percent from 2008 to 2017.
