First-time state House candidate Marilyn Smolenski laments that she can count all the ways that Rep. Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) has betrayed his constituents when it comes to the ongoing sexual harassment scandal that is gripping Springfield.
"Marty Moylan failed us,” Smolenski said in a press release. "Denise Rotheimer details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent. Alaina Hampton details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent. Kelly Cassidy details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent. Maryann Loncar details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent. Today, Sherri Garrett details allegations of sexual harassment, [and] Moylan is silent.”
Smolenski, who is challenging Moylan in the 55th District in November’s general election, insists that Moylan should have stood up to House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) months ago by demanding his resignation due to the scandal.
“Despite a steady stream of allegations against Madigan and his organization, Moylan is standing behind him,” Smolenski added. “Moylan has received over $981,000 from Madigan and Tim Mapes, and is protecting Madigan. Moylan has demonstrated he won’t protect us.”
Mapes, Madigan’s longtime chief of staff, is the most recent of his associates to be caught up in the widening scandal after fellow staffer Garrett accused him of a pattern of sexual abuse and bullying.
“Madigan should resign,” Smolenski added. “Moylan should be ashamed of himself and join other leading Democrats to immediately demand Madigan's resignation."
