Evanston-Skokie Community Consolidated School District 65 recently issued the following announcement.
Congratulations to our Class of 2018 retirees! On May 23, District 65 held a luncheon to honor our retirees and to celebrate their many years of dedicated service to our students and families. The faculty and staff in District 65 are the heart and soul of our organization and work tirelessly each and every day to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for our students. Our 26 retirees have a combined 558 years of service! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
Candace Austin began employment in August 1998 as an Early Childhood Teacher. She left District 65 but returned in 2007 as a Family Support Advocate with the Family Center. Candace has a total of 15 years of service with District 65.
Joan Andler began employment as a 5th Grade Teacher at Lincolnwood in April 1998. She has worked at Oakton and most recently King Arts. Joan has 20 years of service with District 65.
Janette Braeutigam began employment as a Special Education Teacher at Dewey in September 1989. She has also worked at Lincoln and most recently Haven. Jan has 29 years of service with District 65.
Marcay Burma-Washington began employment at Haven in September 1990 as a Special Education Teacher. She left District 65 but returned to teach at Oakton and most recently Dewey. Marcay has a total of 23 years of service with District 65.
Martha Caldwell began employment at Rice as Psychologist in August 2003. She has also worked at Park and Orrington. Martha has 15 years of service with District 65.
Gayl Carpenter began employment as a Music Teacher at Haven and King Arts in September 1989. Her most recent assignment is Nichols. Gayl has 29 years of service with District 65.
Marie Chery began employment at Rice as a Teacher Assistant in January 1997. She became a Teacher for Head Start, State Pre-K and most recently Walker. Marie has a total of 20.5 years of service with District 65.
Fran Freeman began employment in August 1991 as a Special Education Teacher at Washington. She has also worked at King Arts, Nichols, Rice and Dawes. Francine has 27 years of service with District 65.
Tina Galbreath began employment at Haven August 1997 as a Secretary where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Tina has 20 years of service with District 65.
Marlene Grossman was hired as the Principal for Park in July 2007. Marlene has 11 years of service with District 65.
Colleen Kelly began employment in August 1996 as a 4th Grade Teacher at Washington where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Colleen has 22 years of service with District 65.
Judith Killheffer began employment as a Substitute Teacher in August 1996. She has been teaching at Oakton since October 1998 where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Judith has a total of 22 years of service.
Paula Lumbi began employment in January 1996 as a Teacher Assistant at Orrington. She has also worked at Lincolnwood and most recently Haven. Paula has 22 years of service with District 65
Rosa McAndrew was hired as a Bilingual Teacher at Washington in September 1988 where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Rosa has 30 years of service with District 65.
Karen Mahoney began employment as a Special Education Teacher at Park in August 1993. Her current assignment is Lincoln. Karen has 25 years of service with District 65.
Diane Melle began working for District 65 in August 2005 as an Accounting Specialist. She is currently the Student Fee and Collection Specialist for the business office. Diane has 13 years of service with District 65.
Ellie Meshkian began employment as a Special Education Teacher at Rice in August 2001 where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Ellie has 17 years of service with District 65.
Jamie Nilapant was hired as Haven’s Library Media Assistant in August 2010. Jamie has 8 years of service with District 65.
Faye Pais was hired in August 1974 as a Primary Grade Teacher at King Arts. She left District 65 but returned to Washington where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Faye has a total of 32 years of service with District 65.
Mary Pomerantz was hired as a Special Education Teacher at King Arts in August 2005. Her most recent assignment is Willard. Mary has 13 years of service with District 65.
Felica Reyes Portner began employment as a 4th Grade Teacher at Oakton in August 1991. She transferred to Rhodes where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Felicia has 27 years of service with District 65.
Julia Starenko began employment as a Substitute Teacher in October 1992. She started teaching kindergarten in 1994 at Washington where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Julia has a total of 26 years of service with District 65.
Doreen Thompson began employment as an ESL Teacher at Oakton in August 1994. She has also worked at Chute and most recently Washington. Doreen has 24 years of service with District 65.
Barbara Ulrich began employment teaching Math at King Arts in September 1988. Her most recent assignment is Chute. Barbara has 30 years of service with District 65.
Janet Zappone began employment as a Special Education Teacher for SPPAC in August 2007 where she has remained for the duration of her tenure. Janet has 11 years of service with District 65.
Paula Zelinski began employment as a Math and Science Teacher at Haven in August 1992. Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year Paula has served as President for the District Educators’ Council. Paula has 27 years of service with District 65.
