State Rep. David Harris (R-Arlington Heights) honored the fallen, not veterans, on Memorial Day.
Asking for a tap of the gavel to gain the state House floor’s attention on Monday, Harris, a veteran, said that even though he appreciates being honored on Memorial Day, the holiday is really for the men and women who have died while serving in the military.
“Veterans have their own holiday,” Harris said.

He added that Gen. John Logan, who was the commander and chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, had established the holiday to decorate the graves of comrades who had died defending their country during the Civil War.
“Today is the day to remember those who served in uniform, but unfortunately did not come back,” Harris concluded.
