Owners of 33 homes, businesses or lots in Barrington owe more than $219,000 in delinquent taxes – or $14.03 per resident, according to the Cook County Treasurer.
In all, owners of more than 19,000 properties in Cook County suburbs have a week to pay delinquent property taxes before their balance is auctioned at the annual tax sale May 4.
Unpaid bills will be purchased by investors who can charge the property owner higher interest on the overdue bill. Overdue taxes on properties in suburban Cook County total nearly $68 million, according to the latest tally from the Cook County Treasurer.
Barrington has the highest total overdue per capita in north suburban Cook. Hanover property owners owe $1.1 million – or $10.97 per resident – and Niles property owners owe $1.1 million – or $10.57 per resident. Altogether, unpaid taxes in the region total $9.3 million, with 1,453 properties on the list.
