Katie Miller, the Mt. Prospect Republican vying for the 53rd House District seat in the GOP primary, said the recent campaign donation to Sen. Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago) who allegedly harassed crime victims advocate Denise Rotheimer proves Springfield takes care of their own.
Responding to a Chicago City Wire report titles, “Silverstein re-election bid gets $55,400 boost from State Democratic Victory Fund,” Miller, who is looking to replace retiring Rep. David Harris (R-Arlington Heights), said the donation sends the message that politicians believe that they are above the rules.
“He is also an elected official,” Miller said. “They want to keep their own in power.”
According to the Chicago City Wire, “a member of the Chicago Tribune editorial board recently sent out a message from her personal Twitter account questioning the donation from the State Democratic Victory Fund to Silverstein.”
Furthermore, the report adds “the message from Kristen McQueary read: “Democratic establishment gives $55,400 to Sen. Silverstein. How’s that #metoo movement going, Springfield? Name slightly diff than Cullerton’s (Senate President) PAC but I’m told it’s the same,” according to the Chicago City Wire, adding the tweet included a photo of the State Board of Elections records showing the donation.
Miller, a longtime nurse at St. Alexius in Hoffman Estates and case manager at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, said the continued support of Silverstein by his Democratic peers sends the wrong message to voters, particularly that politicians are above laws.
“Rules don’t apply to people in elected office, as long as you follow the party line they will be supported,” Miller said.
Miller said Silverstein should consider resigning if there is credible evidence against him.
“He only received a slap on the wrist,” Miller said. “We need to have good ethical people representing us, and that is not what we have. Right now we have politicians who believe that they are above rules.”
