State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), who is facing off against Gov. Bruce Rauner in the Republican primary, recently held a news conference at south suburban barbershop to bring greater attention to a lawsuit filed against Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios.
Ives joined community activists, elected officials and local businessmen and women to call for a fair and equitable property tax system in her stop at the barbershop in Phoenix, a release said.
A coalition of public interest attorneys recently filed suit against Berrios alleging that he violated state and federal civil rights and housing laws by purposely generating inaccurate assessments to the detriment of poor and minority homeowners across the county.
Filed in Cook County Circuit Court, the suit further asserts that the county's "residential property tax scheme is neither accurate nor uniform" and is "perpetuating institutional racism" in the way that it systematically shifts tax burden from wealthier, majority-white neighborhoods to poorer, minority neighborhoods.
