Dear editor:
On October 19, you reported that residents around Chicago’s major airports are concerned with foul odors coming from noise replacement windows. Those windows were installed due to the city’s Residential Sound Insulation Program (RSIP), but may be leading to health concerns including respiratory diseases and diminished mental capabilities.
This is interesting because the nation has learned of similar health crises regarding contaminated water in Flint, Michigan—which still has limited access to clean water. Our city, state, and federal elected officials should be addressing this issue with utmost concern for the health of their constituents. It should not take years to elicit a formal response.
The city needs to address the toxicity of the windows, the air quality of the affected families’ homes, and the health concerns that have arose as a result.
With the lackluster responses crafted from Midway-area Congressman Dan Lipinski (D) among others, it is clear these areas need better representation. Lipinski’s silence on this crisis is puzzling since he sits on the Transportation and Infrastructure committee and frequently discusses the importance of the Midway area. The third district, the Midway and O’Hare neighborhoods, and communities across Illinois deserve a candidate that will frequently stand up for our health, and it is for that reason that I will be supporting Democrat Marie Newman in March 2018.
Sincerely,
