Des Plaines FD responds to 152 fires in 2016

Des Plaines Fire Department responded to 988 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the North Cook News.

The calls in Des Plaines included 152 fires - 87 structure fires, 29 vehicle fires and 28 other fires. The fire department also responded to eight calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,947,300 in fire loss - or about $12,811 per fire.

The department also received 836 false calls, including 40 malicious calls and 796 other false calls.

The calls resulted in six civilian fire-related injuries and one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, three fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents.

The Des Plaines Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 91 active employees and 104 retired or inactive employees, was $7,233,446 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $47,588 for every fire in 2016.
