Palatine-Schaumburg Township District 211 School Board candidate Edward Yung of Inverness owes more than $140,000 in back taxes, according to the Cook County Recorder of Deeds (CCRD).

CCRD records show Yung, 65, owes $133,566 to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and $8,282 to the Illinois State Department of Revenue (IDOR) for unpaid federal and state income taxes dating back to 1992.

Yung failed to pay federal taxes in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. He failed to pay state taxes in 1992 and from 2003 to 2010, according to CCRD records.

He did not respond to a request for comment.

Yung, an architect, was first elected to the District 211 school board in 2009.

In 2013, he lost his bid for re-election, running as a Republican. Illinois State Board of Elections records show he voted in the 2016 Democrat primary, however.

Yung also ran for District 211 school board in 2015, but was unsuccessful.

Financial management is a leading issue in the 2017 campaign. District 211 spent $17,383 per student last year, 30 percent more than the Chicagoland average. But only 34 percent of students passed the state's standardized "PARCC" exam.

From 1997 to 2015, district local property tax spending has risen 16 percent, inflation-adjusted, while enrollment has risen only seven percent.

Three seats are up for election on April 4. Running are incumbents Anna Klimkowicz of Schaumburg and Robert LeFevre of Palatine along with Yung, Ralph Bonatz of Schaumburg, Katherine David of Palatine, and Jean Forrest of Rolling Meadows.

Bonatz, David, and Forrest are running as a slate as are Klimkowicz, LeFevre, and Yung.

He told the Daily Herald in a candidate questionnaire that he opposes school choice and supports the district policy to allow a male transgender student access to girls' locker rooms in their high schools.

At a candidate forum on Mar. 5, Yung said he believed children could change the biological sex as recorded at birth and that his views were inspired by a recent Katie Couric documentary on the subject, "Gender Revolution."
