University of Illinois women's track and field team members Britten Petrey of Schaumburg and Megan Lemersal of Park Ridge received Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards, the school said recently.
According to FightingIllini.com, Distinguished Scholar Award winners must be letter winners by their second academic year at their school and have a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 for the previous academic year.
Petrey, a graduate of Schaumburg High School, placed 10th at the 2016 Big Ten Outdoor Championships in steeplechase with a time of 10 minutes, 46.86 seconds. Petrey also ran in the 1500- and 800-meter runs during the outdoor season and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, achieved for having a cumulative career GPA of at least 3.0.
Petrey also shined during the 2015 cross-country season, winning the Illini Open – her first collegiate win – and placing 28th overall at the Big Ten Championships. Petrey ranked second on the team at the Roy Griak Invitational and third on the team at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
Lemersal, an alumna of Maine South High School, was Academic All-Big Ten during the 2016 outdoor season and competed in the mile run at the indoor-season Illini Classic, finishing in a time of 5:33.65.
During the 2015 cross-country season, Lemersal scored points for Illinois at the Big Ten Championships, with a personal-best time in the 6K of 22:24.4. She also competed in the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
The University of Illinois had 74 Distinguished Scholar Award winners.
