Proposed tax increases are set to raise taxes on small businesses by more than 50 percent.

Jillian Bernas, Republican candidate for the 56th Representative District, spoke out against the Progressive Tax Proposal this week. She pointed out that while Illinois and the rest of the nation celebrate National Small Business Week, the politicians in Springfield are proposing higher taxes on small businesses. The proposed tax plan would raise Illinois' small business tax to the second highest in the nation.

“Given that small businesses employ about 50 percent of our Illinois workers, I am amazed that politicians would even consider burdening them even more with taxes in order to protect the status quo and their own power," Bernas said. "I am going to Springfield to protect small businesses and ensure that families have access to job opportunities, not to support job-killing tax hikes being pushed by my opponent and her leadership.”

Bernas pointed out that her opponent, Rep. Michelle Mussman, supports the proposed tax plan, which the Illinois Department of Revenue estimated would cost the state 20,000 jobs and $1.9 billion over the next four years in gross domestic product.

“One way to help those in need is to make sure opportunities exist for individuals to work and support their families through Illinois small businesses that employ 50 percent of our state’s workers,” Bernas said.
