The red light camera system at Routes 59 and 19 in Streamwood, Illinois will begin full operation on May 1.
The red light cameras are intended to reduce the number of accidents at the intersection. The cameras are located on the northbound and eastbound sides of the intersection.
Red light violators will receive warning citations until April 30. Beginning on May 1, violators will receive a ticket in the mail. A vehicle entering the intersection after the light turns red triggers the camera. The photograph documents the violation and license plate of the vehicle. The plate number is then matched to the Department of Motor Vehicle's records. The violation will be reviewed by a Streamwood Police Supervisor, and then a citation will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.
The red light camera system was funded by traffic tickets paid to the village by violators. The village also maintains a red light camera system at Irving Park and Sutton Roads. Red light cameras allow the police to focus on emergency calls and other public safety activities.
