The council held a closed session regarding property, and discussed health and dental insurance for elected officials.
The Des Plaines City Council met on Feb. 1 in the Eleanor Rohrback Memorial Council Chambers at the Des Plaines Civic Center.
The council went into a closed session to discuss the sale or lease of property and the purchase of property. Upon the council's return to the open meeting, it heard a presentation from Northwest Municipal Conference Executive Director Mark Fowler. After dispensing with announcements and the consent agenda, the council reconvened as a committee of the whole.
The committee went on to discuss paid health insurance for elected officials. Residents Stan Zimmerman, Wayne Woodworth and Norbert Paprocki expressed concerns with the costs of health insurance, claiming that elected officials should not have health insurance benefits. After discussion, the committee heard a motion to eliminate the health insurance benefit for elected officials. The motion did not pass.
Also moved and seconded was a referendum question for Nov. 8, regarding health and dental insurance benefits for elected officials. The motion did not pass.
In addition, the committee heard and approved several ordinances before reconvening as the City Council. The council heard the items approved by the committee of the whole and concurred with its recommendations. The council agreed to defer the ordinance amending the city code and motor fuel tax to the Feb. 16 council meeting.
