The City of Elgin began accepting applications for the Historic Architectural Rehabilitation Grant Program on March 7.
The due date is 5 p.m. on April 1.
The grant program helps owners of residential properties in the historic districts restore exterior architectural features, such as porches, windows, decorative details and siding. The grant also includes removing inappropriate features, such as vinyl siding or asphalt shingles.
The grant will reimburse 50 percent of the project costs, up to $20,000. The minimum project cost is $5,000. If the homeowner plans to use a contractor, two bids must be included with the application. If the owner is doing the rehabilitation, a complete materials list and cost is required. Labor is not reimbursed for DIY projects. The project must be completed within 18 months.
Low and moderate-income homeowners may qualify for the 75-25 grant, which has the same guidelines as the 50-50 grant, except the minimum project cost is $2,500. If the home has been divided into apartments, or there are several buildings on the property, there is maximum of four dwellings per property.
Property owners who have questions about the grant program should contact Christen Sundquist at 847-931-6004 or sundquist_c@cityofelgin.org. Applications are available on the city's home page and at the Community Development Department at City Hall.
